Founder guide - Lace coverage

If you want lace without a see-through look, lining has to be clear before production.

When a bride sends a lace mermaid or full-lace reference, I always ask about lining early. The lace may be beautiful, but the lining decides how covered the dress feels in real photos.

Written from Vi's consultation notes for brides ordering custom wedding dresses remotely.

Vi's note

A lace wedding dress is not only about the lace pattern. The lining underneath decides how much skin tone shows through, how white or ivory the dress reads, and how confident the bride feels in daylight photos.

For remote orders, I prefer to write the lining requirement clearly in the brief and show QC photos or video before packing. It is a simple way to reduce surprises when the bride cannot visit the atelier in person.

Color choice

White, ivory, and nude lining give different results.

White lining usually makes a lace dress read cleaner and more bridal. It reduces the see-through effect and keeps the full body of the dress closer to one color family.

Ivory lining is softer and can look warmer on many skin tones. Nude or skin-tone lining makes the lace motif stand out more, but it can also make the dress feel more sheer than a bride expects from an inspiration photo.

  • White

Best when the bride wants a covered, bright, bridal finish and less skin-tone show-through.

  • Ivory

Best when the bride wants a softer bridal color without making the dress look nude-lined.

  • Nude

Best when the lace motif should appear more dimensional, with a more visible contrast against the lining.

  • Mixed lining

Some dresses use different lining levels for bodice, skirt, sleeves, and illusion areas.

Remote QC

Coverage should be checked before the dress is packed.

For international brides, final QC is not just a styling moment. It is a practical checkpoint for the bodice, cups, waist, hip, skirt lining, back view, sleeves, and train connection where relevant.

Kathleen's Australia case is a good example. Her priority was a premium lace mermaid direction with white underlining, so we reviewed the coverage before packing and only used redacted proof for the public case.

What to send

If lining matters to you, say it at the start.

The best first brief is simple: send the lace references, say whether you want white, ivory, nude, or covered lining, and tell me what you are nervous about.

Light changes every dress photo, so QC cannot promise the dress will look identical in every setting. What I can do is confirm the direction, show proof, and make the lining decision visible before dispatch.

  • Write the priority

Example: "I love this lace, but I want the dress to look white and covered."

  • Show the areas

Tell Vi if bust, waist, hip, back, sleeve, or skirt transparency is your main concern.

  • Ask for QC proof

Final QC should include enough distance and light to review the coverage honestly.

  • Keep expectations real

Lace sleeves and illusion mesh can stay more transparent than a fully lined bodice or skirt.

Start with proof

Send the lace you love and the coverage you need.

Include your wedding date, delivery country, lace references, lining preference, and any areas where transparency worries you. Vi will review the direction before quote or payment.
